Ahmed had never been one to settle for the ordinary. His friends often joked that he had “a restlessness of ambition”—always thinking, always exploring, always asking, “What’s next?” He had worn many hats in his career, yet nothing ever truly lit that spark. He was capable, hardworking, and endlessly curious, but something was missing.
Then, the right opportunity knocked—not loudly, but persistently. And it came from the most unexpected source: his friends.
He longed for work that blended creativity, leadership, and impact—something fast-paced and innovative, with room to build. While tech had always intrigued him, the entry barriers seemed intimidating. He wasn’t a coder, nor a designer. What he was, however, was driven. And that drive kept nudging him forward, in search of something extraordinary.
Ahmed was no stranger to group chats overflowing with memes, job links, and unsolicited career advice. One day, in between a hilarious voice note and a wedding invite, a link to the RKY Careers Tech Accelerator Programme popped up.
He didn’t open it at first.
But when two of his friends—both former bootcamp students—mentioned it again on a video call, something clicked. They spoke about it with an energy that was contagious. Real projects. Real teams. Real results. “Ahmed, this isn’t just some online course,” one of them said. “It’s the real deal—and you’d kill it as a Product Owner.”
That evening, he finally explored the programme in full. Ten weeks of immersive learning. A team-based capstone project. Coaching, career support, and a portfolio to show for it. It wasn’t just another training—it was a launchpad.
And just like that, with a mix of curiosity and nerves, Ahmed enrolled in the next available cohort.
Ahmed expected training. He didn’t expect the overwhelming support that followed.
From the welcome session, he was met with warmth, structure, and surprising levels of detail.
Working as a Product Owner on a real cross-functional team, Ahmed quickly found his rhythm. He led sprints, prioritised backlogs, co-created user stories, and coordinated with developers and designers. But beyond the technical skills, it was the RKY ecosystemthat made the difference.
There were mock interviews tailored to product roles, CV and LinkedIn sessions with real-time feedback, weekly accountability check-ins, and endless encouragement from the alumni community. The LMS (Learning Management System) was a goldmine, filled with templates, case studies, and recordings he could revisit anytime.
Ahmed began to feel not just trained—but transformed.
“They believed in me before I fully believed in myself,” he said. “That sort of support? Rare.”
Ahmed had just finished presenting his capstone project when the interviewer, a stern-looking product director, asked, “Tell me about a time your team completely misunderstood your vision.”
Caught off-guard, Ahmed paused. Then smiled. “Ah,” he said. “The Great Doughnut Debacle.”
He launched into a tale of how his team misinterpreted a dashboard requirement as a doughnut ordering feature because someone mentioned a ‘doughnut chart’ in a Figma design. “We spent three hours debating frosting preferences before realising the stakeholder wanted a pie chart instead.”
The panel laughed. So did Ahmed.
That light-hearted moment broke the ice. He then confidently walked them through his agile process, the user stories he created, the product roadmap he developed, and how he facilitated feedback loops to align the team.
One week later, he received the offer Product Owner role.
“Turns out, a good story and a whiteboard marker can be career-changing.”
Now firmly embedded in his new role, Ahmed often reflects on what made RKY different. Yes, the tools and templates were helpful. Yes, the hands-on delivery experience was invaluable. But the true magic was the people—the facilitators, the coaches, the community.
He still logs into the alumni group, answers questions from incoming cohorts, and joins webinars where past students share job search tips. He’s even volunteered to mentor others stepping into Product Owner roles, eager to pay forward the guidance he received.
To anyone considering the programme, Ahmed says this:
“Don’t think twice. If you want to stop Googling ‘how to get into tech’ and actually do it—join RKY. You won’t just gain skills. You’ll gain clarity, confidence, and a tribe that walks with you, even after you’ve landed the job.”
Ahmed’s journey proves one thing: with the right programme, a supportive community, and a little encouragement from your friends, you can go from curious to confident—and land a role you once thought was out of reach.
Across industries and continents, women continue to shape the future in remarkable ways. Yet many of the stories of women building meaningful impact, particularly across Africa and the diaspora, are not always amplified on global platforms.
