The Step to Success: Adewale’s Journey to Landing a Civil Service Role after the Data Analysis Bootcamp

Is landing a Civil Service Role in the UK difficult? Or do you need to enrol for a tech bootcamp to land one?

Can you tell us your experience in the bootcamp? 

I learnt all I needed to know or do to be a data analyst from a place with zero knowledge about the tech world to being in it.

What skills did you learn in the bootcamp that helped you land a Civil Service Role? 

I will talk about the technical aspect of it. The facilitators broke it down into fundamentals: data extraction, data visualization, data dashboards, data analysis and business intelligence.

Can you briefly let us know each of what the fundamentals entail? 

With data extraction, you get to collect and retrieve data from databases using SQL. With data analysis, you can clean, process and analyse data with tools like MS Excel. For visualisation, you represent your analysed data using graphs, charts, etc., so stakeholders can understand it using Excel or Power BI.

How did you land a Civil Service Role? 

One of the benefits of the boot camp is CV optimisation. RKY optimised my CV to show the acquired skills from the bootcamp. With the CV, I started applying for different roles related to data analysis.

At first, I kept getting many rejections and tried again next time. I did not let that stop me, and I kept applying to different places. Several months after the bootcamp, I secured a civil service role with my skills.

Can you give advice to someone out there? 

Never give up. Keep striving until you achieve your goal and, most notably, if necessary, enrol in a bootcamp when you need help transitioning into the tech line.
