Living in the UK has many pros and cons, but if you’re considering moving there, this article is for you.
The United Kingdom has four different countries surrounding it. The countryside is beautiful, with ancient towns like London buzzing with activity and people from around the world, and some of the best-known English sights, including Stonehenge and Big Ben, can be found in the area. Although the United Kingdom consists of four countries, we will mainly focus on popular cities like England and London. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us dive into details on the pros and cons of living in the UK!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro: NHS(National Health Service)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

National Health Service is one of the UK’s significant advantages. International students and expatriates have access to good standard Health care, although they will be required to pay IHS fees as part of most working visas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This visa requirement allows you to utilize the NHS as a regular citizen. Now that I’m in the United Kingdom, I can see my doctor whenever I want, receive prescriptions, go to the emergency room (A&E), or go to a walk-in clinic for all my medical needs. Although all of these services are free, there are still some fees which you will need to pay. Dentists and optometrists are both expensive services, although there are some exceptions. Prescriptions may be required, while others, such as birth control, are free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con: It’s super slow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Like Canada’s, the UK’s free healthcare system has one flaw: it is prolonged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People go to the doctor because so many have access to healthcare and aren’t terrified of huge medical expenses as they are in the United States. But unfortunately, despite the government supporting healthcare, doctors and nurses do not earn as much as they do in the United States. That implies more patients and fewer doctors, particularly doctors who are encouraged to work 20-hour days when their salary is low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citizens of the United Kingdom must wait weeks to see a doctor<\/a>. It can take months to get an appointment with a specialist!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine needing to see a psychiatrist immediately for medication but being told it would take at least two months, even though she was a critical care patient with a brain injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can solve this flaw by paying for healthcare if you can afford it. It is pricey, but not nearly as much as in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro: Europe is easily accessible!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The significant advantage of living in the UK convinced people to stay: you can easily travel throughout Europe!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Kingdom is a very accessible country. With Heathrow as a critical centre for international travel and a plethora of low-cost carriers, getting to Europe whenever you want is a breeze. Flights within Canada<\/a> were usually at least CAD 300, which took HOURS. You can now go to new destinations without breaking the bank or wasting a weekend in transit.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cons: Brexit and Foreign Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Knowing this is essential if you consider living to the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s start with politics: there are six major political parties in the United Kingdom. Their parties, like the United States and\u00a0Canada<\/a>, entail a lot of squabbling and lengthy debates, making it difficult for any bill to pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brexit was the result of this. The Tories, a xenophobic and financially conservative party, intended to leave the EU to gain more autonomy. So they had a vote, which passed; as a result, the United Kingdom quit the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long-term consequences include a gasoline shortage and difficulties for British nationals seeking to travel abroad. It also makes it difficult for EU citizens who have lived and worked in the UK for a long time. Expats from the United Kingdom are also finding it challenging to stay overseas now that they require a Visa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you visit the UK, keep in mind that it is no longer technically a member of Europe. As a result, their passports aren’t as valuable as they used to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro: Snow is nothing compared to Canada<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Living in England during the winter is unquestionably advantageous. They hardly ever see winter. Most southern cities only get a few inches of snow annually, and most of it melts very immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rain does not fall exclusively during one season; it can fall at any time of year and on any given day. And this brings us to the four types of weather in the UK: winter, Summer, Spring and Fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Winter <\/a>is the coldest season in the UK, with sub-zero temperatures, ice conditions, and occasional snow. It lasts from November to March. However, it might last longer in some years. It is marked by chilly weather, rain, and occasionally snow and fog. The sun rises at around 7 or 8 a.m, and sets at around 4 p.m. in the UK during the winter, making the days short and the nights long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On<\/a> the other hand, summer is the hottest season in the UK, with long bright days, thunderstorms, and, on rare occasions, heatwaves. Therefore, if you want milder temperatures and longer days, the summer months(June, July and August) are the ideal season to visit the UK. Temperatures will range from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius (59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit). However, in recent summers, the UK has had considerably hotter weather (above 30 degrees Celsius\/86 degrees).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Spring, which lasts from March to May, is one of the most beautiful times to visit England, with blooming flowers, warmer weather, and more upbeat attitudes. Although, on average, daily highs range from 53\u00b0F (12\u00b0C) to 64\u00b0F (18\u00b0C) with lows between 43\u00b0F (6\u00b0C) and 55\u00b0F (13\u00b0C), don’t be shocked if winter lasts longer or summer arrives earlier than expected \u2014 springtime weather<\/a> in the UK is also unpredictable!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Autumn\/Fall<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Fall will captivate you if you come from a section of the world where seasonal changes aren’t as striking. Autumn arrives in September, bringing cooler temperatures and shorter days to foreshadow the coming winter. Autumn temperatures range from 5 to 15 degrees Celsius, yet it may be a lovely time of year, especially given the long, dismal winter ahead. However, autumn is typically London’s rainiest season<\/a>, so be prepared for wet weather!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, England isn’t genuinely gloomy, and the media has portrayed it as a place where it never stops raining. The UK gets a lot of rain, but not quite as much as most other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it rains, the entire country transforms into a grey haze of what it once was. People’s moods shift as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rain is usually light \u2014 nothing like New Zealand’s winter downpours. That makes it simple to get out and enjoy yourself. It does, however, put a jumper on enjoyable UK day trips and walks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you plan to live in the United Kingdom, you’ll need to get some wellies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro: Vacation is a big deal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The UK holidays leave to die for! Even if you work at Mcdonald’s, every job gets a least four weeks off!
You’ll have plenty of vacation time if you work for a salary. As your firm grows, you’ll get even more time off!
It sounds like bliss to Canadians who get two weeks of vacation per year with a maximum option of four weeks. So it’s no surprise that so many British travel bloggers can travel the world while working full-time in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con: Poor Work- Life Balance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, the majority of UK jobs<\/a> do not offer paid vacation time. Most jobs necessitate individuals working more than the usual 40 hours per week. You feel that you should carry your job home with you to finish it. Many jobs require employees to stay late to complete their tasks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any government prioritizing labour over healthy living does not have support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When considering a publishing position in the UK, it is essential to instantly put off because practically every UK employee will be “on the clock” from when they wake up until they retire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may be as simple as reading emails, but it means you won’t be able to switch off your brain and take an actual vacation. Living in the UK is a disadvantage for folks like me who value work-life balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro: Easy Train Transport System<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Travelling by train <\/a>is another advantage of living in the UK. It’s the most convenient mode of transportation! You don’t even have to be concerned about your stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is reasonably possible to travel around England by train. Their rail signage is simple to see, and Google Maps<\/a> can assist you with any necessary transfers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The train costs roughly the same as flying, but you don’t have to arrive at the station hours ahead of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con: Constant Trains Delay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, those trains that are so convenient to travel are usually delayed.
Any weather throws the trains off schedule. They’ll be postponed or cancelled altogether.
In addition, trains in England are notorious for running late, which is a nuisance if you need to get to work or a conference on time. Therefore, it is advisable that if you have a specific timetable or a tight one, it is better to take or board the train earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro: Work Opportunities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The economy of the United Kingdom is thriving. This provides British citizens with several job opportunities. London is the most popular place to work. The majority of the major industries and businesses are active here. Although most people do not live in cities (they prefer surrounding suburbs and small towns), they work there. So if you’re looking for improved job prospects, the United Kingdom could be your place!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con: Language Barriers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You’ll have trouble finding work if you don’t speak English fluently, don’t have a UK passport or live north of Oxford. The United Kingdom prefers to employ its citizens, implying that if you give them any sign that you aren’t from the UK, they will consider you a nuisance. For people like myself who require a work visa, most employers are unwilling to assist you in obtaining the necessary permits. They frequently leave you to it, only hiring you once the details are seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unless you receive a Working Holiday Visa<\/a>, you’ll need an employer to help you get a Visa to work in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most occupations in the UK are located in the south, and it’s primarily true in the workplace. Large corporations are beginning to open offices in the north of England as part of a campaign to provide more job opportunities. However, my northern friends continue to have a more challenging time finding work than the rest of the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is partly due to the perception that they don’t dwell in the south and would have to commute. And it has something to do with the classism associated with accents (more on that later).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s a lot easier to keep acquiring jobs once you’ve got one. However, finding your first job as an expat would be difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look for a corporation in your native nation with a presence in the United Kingdom. Then, after a year or two, ask to be transferred through them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro: Cheap Cell Plans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cheap cell plans have to be another advantage of living in the UK. In Canada, the Phone plan is as low as CAD 75 and never appears to provide more than 1GB of data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most individuals opt for a Giffgaff phone plan that costs \u00a38 for over 3GB of data! This featured unlimited calls and texts throughout the United Kingdom and Europe (although Europe may soon be phased out).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con: High Cost of Living<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cell phone plans <\/a>do not reflect the cost of living in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people research the cost of living before relocating, which is a wise decision. However, it may deter you from migrating overseas to the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cost of living in England is exceptionally high, particularly in large cities like London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I found the cost of living in Oxford to be highly exorbitant. Living on your own with a full-time minimum wage salary was not a viable option. You’d need a few roommates and still have to live outside the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jobs in the UK pay well once you get past entry-level professions, but the cost of living is high enough to make it difficult for individuals to make ends meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside of London and Oxford, the cost of living improves significantly. You will find it considerably more affordable in cities like Bristol. However, it remains higher than that of other European countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
